Former Berlin Airport - GBA Group successfully completes its largest environmental project involving building pollutants.

The historic Berlin property has approximately 386 hectares and about 40,000 rooms in the building. Here, the GBA team took a total of 6,851 environmental samples, also at dizzying heights on the roof.

These were analyzed in GBA laboratories in Berlin, Gelsenkirchen and Pinneberg for PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), PCBs (dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls), asbestos, heavy metals and wood preservatives.

Milestone for GBA Group

"With this project, we have reached a whole new level in terms of heights, size and scope," reports Ralf Murzen, Managing Director of GBA Environment with pride.

The complexity of the project presented GBA with several challenges. In addition to the huge organizational and logistical effort, the preservation of the historic airport was also an essential issue, as Ricky Wittmann, Berlin site manager, explains: "Since everything also had to be restored to its original conditions, we had roof sheeting weldings shut at a heights of about 40 meters."
