Reclassification of sulfur dioxide (SO2) planned by the EU

SO2 is one of the most commonly used food preservatives in the EU. ECHA is planning a re-evaluation and EFSA has been consulted to determine provisional Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) groups of the food additives sulfur dioxide (E 220), sodium sulfite (E 221), sodium bisulfite (E 222), sodium metabisulfite (E 223), potassium metabisulfite (E 224), calcium sulfite (E 226), calcium bisulfite (E 227) and potassium bisulfite (E 228).

The determination of SO2 in food is a routine analysis at GBA Group.
