Non-renewal of the authorization for the pesticide Phosmet

Phosmet is used as an active ingredient in plant protection products and is used, for example, in the rapeseed harvest in Europe. While plant protection products containing Phosmet are already banned in Germany, this regulation will now apply throughout Europe from May 01, 2022. Plant protection products containing Phosmet will then no longer receive approval.

The new DVO (EU) 2022/94 on the non-renewal of the approval for the active substance Phosmet in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009 concerning the placing of plant protection products on the market and amending the Annex to DVO (EU) No 540/2011 regulates this.

According to the Commission, the active ingredient is currently still used in 14 states, including France, Poland, Belgium and Hungary. French rapeseed growers in particular had lobbied for an extension of the approval for this active ingredient. The reason for refusing further approval is a high acute and chronic risk to consumers, aquatic organism and animals, especially bees, located near the areas of Phosmet use.

However, the European Commission grants a phase-out period until 01.11.2022. Pesticide testing is a routine parameter of the GBA Group.
