Maximum levels for perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in foodstuffs
Perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of industrial chemicals that include about 4700 substances. They are used in industrial processes to chromium-plate products and manufacture semiconductors but also in consumer products such as paint, leather coatings, outdoor clothing and packaging. Through industry, PFAS enter the environment and contaminate soil and water. They are very stable and degrade only slowly in nature. PFAS have therefore also been detected in a wide range of food and animal feed products. The industrial chemicals can be toxic to the liver and development and impair the hormone and immune systems.
In the course of the Greendeal, maximum levels for perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in certain foods are to be newly included in Regulation (EC) 1881/2006 with project SANTE 11183-2018 Rev.0. Here, maximum levels are set for the best-known representatives, perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) in various products, which are in the lower ppb range.
GBA Group has developed a method for PFAS analysis. The accredited routine parameter of the GBA Group can detect a spectrum of 28 substances with highest sensitivity. The product groups meat, fish, eggs, fruit, vegetables, baby food and milk are covered and limits of determination below the specified maximum levels are achieved, so that even traces of the substances can still be detected.
